Curiosity, the joy of discovery, the search for answers to new questions, and knowing that research findings may one day help specific patients. These are some of the reasons why scientists choose this career path. Science offers space for new ideas, continuous learning, and the search for connections and solutions to problems that can have a real impact on clinical practice. At the same time, though, it is a profession that requires patience, perseverance, and often also the ability to cope with uncertainty. Failed experiments and dead ends are a natural part of it, as are the less inspiring aspects of scientific work – lack of time, uncertain funding, or the administrative burdens. Still, the main driving force remains the desire to discover, to learn new things, and to do work that is meaningful

Most of all, what I enjoy about science is the very process of seeking answers to questions which arise from clinical practice. I like being able to define my own research questions, find a suitable study population, analyse the data collected, and then process and publish the results. It is a process that teaches me patience and attention to detail. I find it rewarding when I manage to translate everyday clinical experience into a project that can contribute to a better understanding of a particular problem or improve the care of our patients in the future, even if it is not something revolutionary. It is this link between clinical medicine and research that adds spice to my work.
The biggest challenge for me is time. Working as a doctor under the conditions here, it is difficult to free oneself from clinical duties, which, quite understandably, always take priority. Research is therefore often pushed back to the evenings, weekends, or other spare moments. At times like those, it is especially hard to find the energy and motivation to get started with analysing the data, writing articles, or preparing projects. I think most doctors involved in research are familiar with this feeling: it is not really a lack of enthusiasm but rather a search for the space where one can conduct good research in the long term. But I am also aware of trends from the West, where efforts are being made to adapt working practices to allow doctors to find space within the working week for their academic and scientific activities.

I have always enjoyed getting to the bottom of things and looking for connections where they are not obvious at first sight. What fascinates me about science is that you never reach a point where you know everything. Every question answered just opens up several more, and there is always something new to discover. In my field, there is also a clear motivation in knowing that the results of my work do not just remain on paper or in publications but can actually help us to better understand diseases and contribute to the care of specific patients. I enjoy the combination of analytical thinking, new technologies, and the feeling that I am a part in something that is meaningful and has practical use.
And what annoys me? Probably in effect the very same thing that I enjoy. Science never really ends. You rarely leave work feeling that you have sorted everything out and can forget about it until the next day. You often carry unresolved problems around in your head, mulling over results or searching for explanations as to why something did not work as expected. Science involves many failed experiments and dead ends, but overcoming these obstacles and seeking new solutions is one of the reasons why research is so motivating. It is demanding, sometimes frustrating, but without this uncertainty and constant searching, it would not really be science.

My main motivation comes from the desire to keep learning and discover new things. What I enjoy the most about scientific work is exploring new hypotheses and devising approaches to solving specific problems. This is what this makes my work varied and diverse. I also enjoy working with students and passing to them the knowledge I have gained. But I also see science as a way of linking my work to something of long-term significance.
What annoys me most is funding and the associated administrative burden; the level of uncertainty is certainly the biggest issue in this regard. Aside from that, I would also mention the need to adapt my personal life to the specific demands of a research career, which is often not easy.
