Once again this year, Researchers’ Night opened the doors of research institutions, offering the public an opportunity to experience the world of research up close. The National Institute for Cancer Research organised a lecture for visitors at the Academic Club of the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University. NICR partner institutions at other locations also took part in the festival programme.
In her lecture, “Cellular Chat: When Cancer Takes Control of Cell Communication”, Tereza Šváblová from the Institute of Biochemistry and Experimental Oncology at the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, and the National Institute for Cancer Research introduced visitors to the world of the tumour microenvironment and showed how cancer cells can alter communication with their surroundings and exploit it to their own advantage. The lecture attracted considerable interest, with the Academic Club of the First Faculty of Medicine – Fausťák filled to capacity. The discussion that followed confirmed that even complex topics in contemporary cancer research can engage a broad public audience.
NICR was also represented at a number of other venues during this year’s Researchers’ Night. For example, the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Czech Academy of Sciences opened its laboratories to visitors and offered interactive activities and opportunities to meet scientists in person. At the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute in Brno, the programme began with an expert discussion on how prevention, modern diagnostics and research are transforming patient care, followed by further activities for the public. We would like to thank all our partner institutions, as well as the researchers across the consortium, who took part in this year’s Researchers’ Night and help bring science and research closer to the public.
