NICR in the AACR Congress Programme

The annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) took place in Chicago on April 25–30. The programme included several studies by research groups from the National Institute for Cancer Research (NICR), from which we have selected the following information.

Brussels takes note of the NICR initiative

The conference "Accelerating Cancer Research and Innovation in Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructures for Europe" offered a insight into how cancer research can transform clinical practice. Director of NICR Aleksi Šedo was among those invited to speak in Brussels, where he presented the activities and objectives of the national institute.

About gene expression regulation with Kurumi Nishimagi

On the last day of March, Kurumi Nishimagi from Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan, visited the Laboratory of Cancer Cell Architecture at the NICR, First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University. At her home institution she is involved in research within the Usage of Synchrotron Light for Life Science programme, focusing, among others, on mechanisms of functional regulation of the genome and their application to the control of genomic functions.

After successful previous years, the Czech Immunological Society in cooperation with the Institute of Microbiology of the CAS is organizing the "Summer School on Tumor Microenvironment and Immunity" for the third time.

Kari Hemminki received an honorary doctorate from Charles University

Kari Hemminki, a world-renowned expert in the field of cancer epidemiology and genetic risk factors, whose research group is part of the NICR, was awarded an honorary doctorate by Charles University on 4 March.

Talented high school students in the labs!

Nearly a hundred selected high school students had the opportunity to visit some of the National Cancer Institute's research teams' laboratories during October and November. During intensive interactive workshops, they were able to experience how science is done, at least for a short while.

Current challenges in neurooncology

On 24-25 June 2024, the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute hosted prominent foreign experts focusing on neuro-oncology. The conference "Current challenges in neurooncology: meet the Young Neuro-Oncologist experts", which was also held under the auspices of the National Institute for Cancer Research, featured lectures by Johnny Duerinck, Alessia Pellerino, Marjolein Geurts and Johan A. F. Koekkoek, as well as domestic speakers Tomáš Kazda, Michal Hendrych and Petr Výmola.
