Join us at AFO 2026 and don’t miss the documentary “André Is an Idiot”—a story about a man who is dying because he underestimated prevention and did not undergo a colonoscopy in time. Representatives of NICR will also take part in the subsequent discussion.
The program of the 61st International Festival of Science Documentary Films, Academia Film Olomouc (AFO), will once again feature its traditional international competition. Among the selected films—known for creatively combining science with audiovisual artistry and presenting fascinating human stories alongside critical reflections on contemporary challenges—is the American documentary André Is an Idiot.
Described as the most cheerful film about death and dying, the screening will take place on Wednesday, 29 April 2026 at 1:00 PM at Kino Metropol. The film offers a reflection on the inevitability and transience of human existence, while also portraying the process of treatment and coming to terms with a terminal cancer diagnosis. The documentary blends personal testimony with observational scenes from everyday life, as well as extraordinary rituals. It is further enriched by puppet animation and editing techniques that reflect the personality of its main protagonist—uncompromising and wildly eccentric.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with the film’s producers and Czech experts: Petr Hříbek from the Central Military Hospital in Prague, whose professional focus includes screening and early diagnosis of gastrointestinal cancers (including those of the liver, bile ducts, and pancreas), and Václav Liška, head of the Laboratory of Cancer Treatment and Tissue Regeneration at the Biomedical Center of the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen (Charles University), which is part of NICR. His team, among other areas, investigates the role of the transcriptome, proteome, and microbiome in the development and prognosis of colorectal cancer.
